SUN CITY/PEORIA, Ariz. -- Deputies shot and killed a man after a two-hour standoff that started as domestic violence call Sunday night.

It happened near 115th Avenue and Happy Valley Parkway, east of Loop 303.

The suspect's wife called 911 just before 8 p.m., telling the dispatcher her husband was drunk and had tried to choke her. The woman also gave the dispatcher an essential piece of information -- there were several weapons inside the home.

Deputies heard a gunshot as they arrived on the scene and immediately called SWAT and started trying to negotiate with the suspect.

Those negotiations went on for two hours. At that point, according to MCSO, things went south.

According to MCSO Officer Christopher Hegstrom, the suspect, armed with what "appeared to be" an assault rifle," started firing at deputies. The deputies returned fire, killing the man.

At this point, MCSO has not released the name of the suspect. Investigators are trying to piece together what happened in the time leading up to the wife's 911 call.

According to the man's wife, this was the first time her husband attacked her during an argument.

No other injuries were reported.
