PHOENIX -- A Phoenix police officer was injured Thursday night after a suspected drunk driver hit his patrol car.

The collision occurred at about 10:30 p.m. while the officer was conducting a traffic stop near Van Buren and 24th streets.

The officer had obtained information from the driver and was sitting inside his clearly marked Chevrolet Tahoe patrol vehicle with emergency lights flashing when Evelyn Rivas failed to control her car and rear-ended the police car, according to police spokesman Officer James Holmes.

The police vehicle then struck the car that had been stopped by the officer. Rivas' vehicle hit two parked cars in the parking lot of a used car business before coming to a rest.

The driver and passenger of the car that had been pulled over were treated for minor injuries at the scene and released.

The officer and Rivas, 24, were transported to a local hospital.

The officer, who has been with the Phoenix Police Department for six years, was later released from the hospital.

Rivas was processed for suspicion of DUI, medically cleared for release, and later booked into jail on one count of aggravated DUI (suspended license) and three counts of endangerment.
