PEORIA, Ariz. -- A woman was killed in an early morning apartment fire in Peoria.

Firefighters were called out to the Monroe Apartments southeast of 91st and Peoria avenues at about 3:30 a.m.Thursday.

There was only a little bit of smoke showing when crews arrived on the scene.

When they went inside, they discovered a woman lying on the floor in the center of a small fire in the living room.

The woman was severely burned and had suffered smoke inhalation. She was rushed to a local hospital where doctors pronounced her dead.

Investigators are trying to determine what sparked the fire. All they have said at this point is that it does not appear suspicious.

No information about the victim has been released.

No other residents were affected by the fire.
