SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Twin brothers from El Mirage are accused of stealing donations meant for war veterans.

Surprise police said 21-year-old brothers Brian and Brandon Baird stole donations that were being collected outside the Walmart store near Bell Road and Grand Avenue by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Witnesses told officers that two males stole the VFW donation container and fled the area. Two VFW volunteers chased the suspects but lost sight of them before police arrived.

Officers began searching the area and were approached by a witness who had seen two males run across Bell Road and enter Sprouts Farmers Market.

Police found both suspects hiding in the store's restroom and took them into custody.

Police spokesman Sgt. Bert Anzini said the suspects had the donation money in their possession at the time of their arrest and it was later returned to the VFW volunteers.

While police were at the scene of the arrest, an employee of the nearby Cobblestone Auto Spa recognized the suspects and told the officers that the two men had stolen items from his store in August but had not been caught.

The brothers were booked into Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail for charges related to the theft of the donation money and the shoplifting.
