SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Police arrested two men suspected of stealing backflow preventers from numerous businesses in the Scottsdale Airpark.

A Scottsdale police officer stopped a pickup truck for a traffic violation near 76th Street and Greenway/Hayden Loop at about 3:20 a.m. Tuesday. As the officer approached the vehicle, 14 backflow preventers were observed in the bed of the truck.

Keith Tracy Keller, 31, and John William Rowland, 29, were detained and subsequently arrested for numerous charges, including backflow preventer thefts, possession of burglary tools, driving on a suspended license and other charges.

Approximately 16 businesses in the area were identified as having their backflow preventers stolen and/or cut apart, according to police.

A backflow preventer protects water supplies from contamination or pollution due to backflow.

Investigators will work to get the items back to the businesses, but police said the damage done by equipment removal will total in the thousands of dollars.

Keller and Rowland are being held in custody.
