PHOENIX -- The northwest Valley will be welcoming the light rail a little sooner than expected.
On Thursday, the first of several signs marking where the light rail extension will go were revealed at the stop at 19th Avenue and Montebello.
The northwest extension will take the green line an extra 3.2 miles from Montebello to Dunlap.
“Today we wanted to take advantage to lay a marker so that the public knows that we are fully committed to extending this light rail into northwest Phoenix,” said Greg Stanton, Mayor of Phoenix.
The light rail extension was originally expected to be finished by 2023. It’s now expected to be completed by 2016.
Local and federal transportation dollars have helped speed up construction.
