PD: Ex-cop shot Raiders fan outside Cardinals game, possibly in self-defensePosted: Updated:
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Glendale police have released new information about a shooting that happened near the University of Phoenix Stadium during an Arizona Cardinals football game.
Police said Wednesday that Michael Horan, 57, may have shot Chris Knight, 29, in self-defense.
Sgt. Brent Coombs said Horan is a former out-of-state police officer, but he has not been involved in law enforcement for quite some time.
Horan and his wife had attended the Aug. 17 game between the Cardinals and the Oakland Raiders but left early. They were at their vehicle in a parking lot near the stadium when they were involved in a confrontation with Knight, who also had been at the game.
Police said Horan shot Knight once and remained at the scene.
Knight was transported to a local hospital. His family said he was shot in the eye and had to have it removed, along with other procedures to remove the bullet and reconstruct parts of his face.
Prior to the shooting, contract employees working the parking lots were told that a man with silver face paint was being aggressive toward motorists attempting to leave the lot near the Hampton Inn. A short time later, police received a report of a shooting in the lot involving a man with the same description.
Early in the investigation, Glendale police said they received a call around 9:30 that night from a man claiming that he had accidentally shot another man in a parking lot just north of the stadium.
Police initially said the altercation appeared to be fan-based, but Coombs said Wednesday that there is no information that the confrontation had anything to do with the fact that they were supporting opposing teams.
Police said there is no evidence that Horan was impaired, but there is a possibility of impairment involving Knight.
Detectives will be submitting the current findings of the investigation to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for review.
Knight's family said he doesn't have insurance and is the sole provider for his family. They are struggling to pay his medical bills. To read more from the family, visit www.wepay.com/donations/130584.
