MESA, Ariz. -- Police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl who died at a mobile home where she lived with her mother and 1-year-old brother.

The home is near 56th Street and Broadway Road.

According to police, the children's 22-year-old mother called 911 on Saturday evening to report that her daughter was unconscious, not breathing and unresponsive.

The child was pronounced deceased at the scene from unknown causes.

Her brother was transported to a hospital from the scene by ground ambulance.

Police said it was extremely hot inside the trailer. Both children appeared malnourished and dehydrated, but neither child showed signs of obvious trauma.

The boy was expected to be released from the hospital Tuesday and into the care of Child Protective Services.

Police are waiting for a report from the medical examiner before they decide how to move forward with the investigation and whether to recommend charges against the mother.

The mobile home did have electricity and running water, but the air conditioning was broken and had been broken for at least a couple of days, according to Sgt. Tony Landato with the Mesa Police Department.

Landato said Arizona Child Protective Services has been called about this family at least once in the past.

The family was from Washington state and had only been in Arizona for about one year. Landato said that CPS in Washington had also been involved with the family.
