GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Heartbreak for a family in Goodyear as an early morning house fire destroys what they own.
Elizabeth Wittig and her husband were fast asleep when her mom jolted them awake.
“Banged on our door to wake us up and we got up and we all came downstairs and then I called 911 immediately,” said Wittig.
Goodyear Fire said the fire squeezed into the attic, and by the time firefighters arrived there was little they could do to save the home.
“Unfortunately there was a partial collapse of the roof and our crews had to fight the fire from the exterior and evacuate the building,” said Goodyear Fire Captain Stephen Gilman.
Once everybody was out of the house Wittig had another concern, she hadn't seen her dog. A short time later, her four-legged friend appeared.
“A relief, a big relief because I was worried he was going to die,” commented Wittig.
What caused the fire is still unknown.
