PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Fire Department responded to a call of a person on fire Monday night and found a woman with severe burns rolling around in a front yard.

The victim had already put the fire out by rolling on the ground when crews arrived at the home near 18th Street and Broadway Road shortly after 8 p.m.

The 40-year-old woman was rushed to Maricopa Medical Center's burn unit with second- and third-degree burns to 70 to 80 percent of her body. She is listed in critical condition.

Fire officials said there was a heavy presence of gas fumes that somehow ignited. Police located a gas can at the scene.

There was no apparent damage to the inside of the home.

"The investigation is ongoing and investigators are unsure if the victim set herself on fire, as suggested by a witness, or if it is the result of a criminal act," Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump said.
