MESA, Ariz. -- Isolated and severe thunderstorms hit various parts of the Valley on Monday night. The storms brought lightning, rain and blowing dust.
A mobile home park in Mesa seemed to get hit the hardest. At least two homes at the park near Broadway and Higley roads were damaged.
The woman who lives in the home that suffered the worst damage described some frightening moments when an intense storm came through the area.
The woman said she was too upset to go on camera, but she said she was inside the home when she felt the strong wind, heard a downpour of rain and then part of her roof collapsed.
She was not hurt and nobody else was home at the time. Both houses are uninhabitable at this time according to a spokesman for the Mesa Fire Department. The Red Cross is on scene to offer assistance.
"The roof structure has separated from the walls of the structure," said Mesa fire Capt. Mark Jaconelli. "The rain was actually coming in sideways...and our visibility en route to the call we could only go about 10 miles an hour in order to get to the call. It was that bad. Our visibility was that pour."
The storm knocked out power in some areas of the East Valley. SRP reported more 1,000 customers with no electricity, but expected the power to be restored within one hour.
East Mesa got more than one inch of rain in about 35 minutes. That made for treacherous driving conditions. Wind gusts of more than 45 mph were also reported in the area.
