Taylor Kelly named ASU starting quarterbackPosted: Updated:
TEMPE, Ariz. – The highly anticipated decision of who will be the next quarterback for Arizona State University has been made.
“We are going to go with Taylor (Kelly) there,” head coach Todd Graham announced Monday after practice. “We have to put the person on the field that gives us the best chance to win. That is why we went with Kelly.”
Coming into camp, Kelly was listed third on the depth chart. However, through hard work, ball security and perseverance, Kelly was able to emerge as the starter.
“It’s a dream come true,” Kelly stated. “I’ve always dreamed of this and I have been working hard ever since I’ve came into ASU. I have been fighting through adversity and I’m excited. I can’t wait.”
Kelly was notified Monday morning that he would be the starting quarterback.
“Coach Graham told me that, ‘you’re going to be our guy going into NAU. I have great trust in you to lead us and go out there and do your thing.’”
The decision was not an easy choice for the Sun Devil’s head coach.
"They made it extremely difficult, I can tell you that,” Graham said. “I have never been in a situation like this. I have never had three guys of that quality at that position and it’s been a very hard decision to make.”
Coach Graham made it very clear that the battle for the starting role has not ended. A sentiment sophomore quarterback Mike Bercovici (Bur-koh-VEE-chee) took to heart.
“I truly feel I can end up being on the field this year,” Bercovici said. “I feel like I have the leadership qualities that can take this team to the Rose Bowl and I truly believe that. My mind is in practice and I’m still competing. We can be in the 10th week of the season and I’m going to be out here practicing like the starter.”
Even though he was not named the starter, red shirt Freshman Michael Eubank is going to see action during week one against Northern Arizona.
“I’m just going to do what I can.” Eubank stated, “I’m just going to get in whenever I get in and make sure my reps are perfect. Whenever my number is called, I’m going to make the plays I need to make.”
