Woman accused of killing, dismembering mom pleads not guilty

PHOENIX -- A woman accused of killing her 73-year-old mother and trying to cut up the body pleaded not guilty Thursday.
Carol Hatley, 42, faces a second-degree murder charge.
Police said Hatley asked a neighbor to call 911 for her mother at about 3:30 a.m. on July 30. When officers arrived at the home near Cactus Road and 47th Avenue, they found the body of Deborah Hatley partially dismembered.
Police said Hatley provided a statement regarding the circumstances that preceded the death of her mother and was taken into custody. Court paperwork indicates that what Hatley told officers did not mesh with what they were seeing at the scene or the time line provided by Martin.
Police said the mother and daughter lived together in the home and they had a very tumultuous relationship.
Hatley's next court date is scheduled for Sept. 28.
