PHOENIX -- Maricopa County sheriff's deputies arrested seven suspected drug dealers during a raid in central Phoenix late Monday night.

Acting on a tip, deputies obtained a search warrant on a home in the area of 35th Avenue and Camelback Road, according to MCSO spokesman Sgt. Brandon Jones. Deputies determined a high threat level and called for a sheriff's SWAT team.

Jones said the SWAT unit busted down the stash house door and faced several suspects, most of whom were brandishing firearms.

No shots were fired and seven suspects were taken into custody on drug charges. Each was later determined to be an illegal immigrant.

Deputies searched the home and seized 200 pounds of marijuana, $1,000 in U.S. currency, some cocaine and eight firearms, one of which was a stolen handgun.

"This is yet another case that underscores the close tie between illegal immigration and drug trafficking in our community," Sheriff Joe Arpaio said. "When we can finally reduce the number of incoming illegal aliens, we will see a corresponding reduction in the amount of illegal narcotics and that will be good news for Maricopa County."

Arpaio said that so far this year deputies have seized nearly 13,000 pounds of marijuana and arrested more than 100 illegal immigrants involved in these drug seizures.

Arpaio is in the process of establishing a new street level drug enforcement unit which aims to reduce neighborhood drug trafficking throughout Maricopa County.
