CHANDLER, Ariz. -- A registered sex offender has been arrested after police say he grabbed a boy in a restroom at a Chandler restaurant over the weekend.

According to Chandler police, John Isabel Chavez, 22, grabbed an 11-year-old boy in the men's restroom at the Red Robin near Price Road and Chandler Boulevard Sunday evening.

Chavez allegedly rubbed the child's shoulders and told him he would be at his house later in the evening. When the boy attempted to leave, Chavez blocked his path.

The boy eventually was able to get away. He told his mother what had happened and police were called.

Chavez left the scene in a red pickup truck.

As officers arrived at the restaurant, police learned of a single-vehicle collision involving a red pickup truck nearby. Officers were able to identify Chavez as the driver, as well as the suspect in the assault at the Red Robin.

Chavez was initially placed under arrest for DUI and transported to a local hospital where he underwent treatment for his injuries from the collision. After he was released from the hospital, he was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on one count each of assault, disorderly conduct, unlawful imprisonment, DUI and DUI with a BAC of .08 or above.

Chavez was convicted of child molestation in 2010. His sentence was suspended and he was placed on lifetime probation.

He is a level two registered sex offender and currently resides in Mesa.
