Staying hydrated while pregnant important in the summer heat

PHOENIX -- With the summer heat beating down on the Valley, it’s more important than ever for pregnant women to stay hydrated.

High risk OB specialist Dr. John Elliott stopped by 3TV, where he said women who are expecting should make sure they’re drinking four to six 16 ounce bottles of water a day.

“Dehydration can decrease the blood concentration in the body, and that leads to a release of hormones called oxytocin, which is a cause of contractions,” explained Dr. Elliott

Dr. Elliott said being dehydrated can ultimately lead to preterm labor. In order to avoid an early trip to the hospital, Dr. Elliott recommends listening to your body.

If you’re feeling tired when you normally wouldn’t, or experiencing things like chapped lips or a dry mouth, then it’s time to slow down and drink water.

“We’ve seen an increase in patients reporting to the emergency room at Banner Desert with contractions just from the heat and not keeping up with their fluids,” Dr. Elliott remarked.
