Driver hospitalized after high-speed chase on Loop 101
SCOTTSDALE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -
The driver of a sport utility vehicle was in a Valley hospital after leading officers on a high-speed chase on an East Valley freeway early Tuesday morning.
An Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman said dispatchers received a 911 call about 2:30 a.m. from a motorist claiming they were being followed by a man driving a white Dodge Nitro SUV.
A DPS officer tried to contact the SUV at the Loop 101 Freeway and Broadway Road and the chase was on. The SUV's driver would slow down and speed up again, reaching speeds as fast as 110 mph, the spokesman said.
Stop sticks were deployed about 15 miles later at Cactus Road and caused the SUV to crash into the Loop 101 median, the spokesman.
As officers started to take the man into custody, he became combative and began to inflict wounds to himself, the spokesman said. He did not say what weapon the man used.
The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
No other information, including the man's identity, was immediately available.
The incident closed northbound Loop 101 from Cactus to Raintree Road until about 5:45 a.m.
The DPS investigation was continuing, the spokesman said.
