PHOENIX -- A man who was found lying in the road at 40th Street and Bell Road Thursday morning has died. He had been hit by a car and suffered severe head trauma.

According to police, the man had been involved in a bar fight Wednesday night. He left the bar in a taxi about an hour before he was hit.

"We don't know at this point if there is a connection between the altercation earlier and this or if this is completely unrelated," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump. "This individual was impaired at the time and obviously this is a busy thoroughfare."

Police have not said anything about the fight other than that it happened. Detectives are trying to determine exactly what occurred in the moments leading up to the altercation through the time when a car hit and killed the man some time later.

The man was found in the street at about 2:30 a.m. Investigators have not released any information about him other than that he was apparently drunk and had been involved in some kind of fight.

Investigators do not have a description of the car that hit the man nor do they know anything about the driver.
