4-year-old drowns in murky Mesa swimming pool By Catherine Holland
MESA, Ariz. -- A Mesa 4-year-old is dead after somehow finding his way into a murky backyard swimming pool.
Emergency crews were called out to the neighborhood northeast of Gilbert Road and University Drive shortly after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The police officer who arrived on the scene first performed CPR until firefighters could get there.
"When our crews arrived they found a Mesa police officer doing CPR on the child," said Capt. Forrest Smith with the Mesa Fire Department. "The child was wearing swimming trunks so our assumption would be that there was some pool activity as opposed to being fully clothed."
Despite everyone's best efforts, Cadan Huss Pickering was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
It's not clear how long he was in the water or how he ended up in the pool in the first place.
"When we got there we found, of course, an extremely despondent mother and this child who was not responsive while CPR was being done," Smith said.
The swimming pool reportedly was green and did not have a fence around it.
It's not clear if any charges will be filed in connection with the boy's death.
