HOLBROOK, Ariz. -- A Keams Canyon resident died after falling approximately 60 feet into Chevelon Canyon east of Winslow Saturday evening.

Michael Navasie, 37, was with his girlfriend and two friends in an area near the Chevelon Canyon Bridge on Territorial Road.

According to the Navajo County Sheriff's Office, Navasie was climbing down into the canyon at about 5:40 p.m. when he lost his footing and fell approximately 60 feet into about 5 feet of water. He never resurfaced.

The Joseph City Fire Department Rope Rescue Team was called and with the help of rescue divers from the Winslow Fire Department recovered Navaise's body.

Investigators believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the accident.

The body was taken to Show Low for an autopsy. Investigators are waiting for the toxicology reports.

The case remains under investigation but investigators do not believe foul play was involved.
