Man critically injured in boat explosion on Lake Powell

PAGE, Ariz. -- A 63-year-old Utah man was critically injured after a boat exploded on Lake Powell Thursday morning.

The National Park Service, Page Fire Department and Coconino County sheriff's deputies responded to the incident, which occurred at the fueling station at Antelope Point.

According to witnesses, the man fueled his boat then attempted to start the engine several times at which point an explosion and subsequent fire occurred.

The victim crawled out of the boat and onto the dock where he was helped by individuals who were in the area and public safety responders.

A bystander received a minor injury when he was struck in the hand by flying debris. 

The victim, whose name was not released, was flown to the University of Utah Burn Unit in Salt Lake City.

The 30-foot 1974 Tollycraft Cabin Motor was destroyed in the fire.

Deputies are investigating the explosion.
