PHOENIX -- A 22-year-old man has been indicted in the shooting death of another man at a Taco Bell drive-thru in Phoenix.

Cordell Lamar Jude was charged with one count of second-degree murder for the shooting death of Daniel Adkins, 29.

"Our decision to prosecute this case is based on a thorough review of the evidence gathered during an extensive investigation by our law enforcement partners, and after a separate and careful analysis of the defendant's assertion of self-defense," said Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery. "After engaging in this deliberative process, we are confident in moving forward with our efforts to hold this defendant accountable for his actions."

Adkins was walking with his dog through the parking lot of a Taco Bell near 51st Avenue and Baseline Road at around 7:45 p.m. on April 3.

Police said Jude was driving in the drive-thru lane with his pregnant girlfriend when Adkins stepped in front of Jude's car, forcing Jude to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting him.

Jude said Adkins began yelling at him and struck the vehicle with his hand or an unknown object, which Jude later said he believed was a bat or similar object. Detectives were unable to locate a bat or similar item at the scene.

Jude told police that Adkins was preparing to take another swing at him and he feared for his life. He then reportedly shot Adkins once with a handgun and immediately called police.

Adkins was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jude will be arraigned at a hearing set for Aug. 9.
