BLACK CANYON CITY, Ariz. -- An off-duty Phoenix police officer lost his life Thursday afternoon on Interstate 17 near Black Canyon City.

That officer has been identified as Detective Peter L. Tuchalski. He had been with the Phoenix Police Department for more than 15 years and was assigned to the Family Investigation Bureau, which handles domestic-violence cases.

Tuchalski was driving northbound in a truck that was pulling a trailer when a gust of wind blew the trailer into a guard rail. The collision with the guard rail caused both the truck and the trailer to flip.

Tuchalski was pronounced dead on the scene.

"Detective Tuchalski was a very hard-working and dedicated officer who will be missed by all," Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson wrote in an email to media outlets.

His wife and teenage daughter were also in the truck. They were taken to John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital and are expected to recover.

Tuchalski and his wife have a second teenage child who was not with them at the time of the crash.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating the wreck.
