FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- A 29-year-old man was hospitalized Wednesday night after falling into a cave in Flagstaff Wednesday afternoon.

Flagstaff Firefighters were called to Mt. Elden to rescue a stranded rock climber. The climber had fallen into a cave and fractured his ankle.

Because of his injuries, the man was not able to get down off the cliffs. Firefighters were also concerned about an approaching thunderstorm.

About 14 Technical Rescue Technicians, firefighters and paramedics from the Flagstaff Fire Department and the Guardian Medical Transport responded to the call. They were able to lower the stranded climber 150 feet down from the cliffs.

The rescue took about two hours and the climber was taken to the Flagstaff Medical Center for treatment.

The climber is expected to recover from his injuries.
