PHOENIX -- Fire tore through a popular Phoenix restaurant early Friday morning.

Firefighters were called out to the Pete's Fish & Chips at 27th Avenue and Van Buren Street at about 2 a.m.

There were flames shooting out the back of the restaurant when they arrived, but they could not get through the security door. That forced crews to go in through the front.

The flames caused extensive damage, but no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Established in March 1947 by Peter McLane Grant Jr., Pete's Fish & Chips is a family-owned business based in Mesa. Specializing in English-style fish and chips, the idea came from the fish-and-chips stores Grant saw while serving in the U.S. military in Europe during the war.

"Pete's Fish & Chips is the Biltmore for the common man," Grant was fond of saying.

Pete's first "Chip House" was located at 30th and Van Buren streets. While that eatery no longer exists, there are seven other Pete's Fish & Chips locations, in addition to the 27th Avenue and Van Buren Street restaurant, throughout the Valley.
