PAULDEN, Ariz. -- Authorities arrested a Paulden man following a child abuse investigation.

Jaccob Billiter, 34, was booked at the Camp Verde Detention Center on charges including child abuse, aggravated assault, disorderly conduct and neglect/abuse of a minor.

Yavapai County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to Billiter's home in the 24000 block of North Highway 89 in Paulden on July 10.

Deputies found Billiter's 6-year-old son had a significant injury to his head and dried blood on his face. Deputies were told that Billiter had recently held the boy upside down and whipped him with a hose as punishment for drinking out of the irrigation system.

The head injury was apparently caused when the boy was dropped head-first on the ground, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies said they found welts on the boy's back that apparently were caused by the hose.

Billiter's 4-year-old son had a visible injury on his forehead resulting from punishment by Billiter, according to deputies.

Paramedics transported the children to the hospital for treatment.

Neighbors told deputies that Billiter had run from the area as they were arriving. He was located at a friend's house the next day and arrested without incident.

Billiter remains in custody on a $10,000 bond. The children remain in protective custody.
