PHOENIX -- Police are trying what led up to a shooting that killed an 18-year-old who was out for a walk with his girlfriend.

It happened at about 9:30 p.m. Monday on 51st Avenue between Baseline Road and Southern Avenue.

According to Officer James Holmes of the Phoenix Police Department, Dewight Westbrook was walking to McDonald's with his girlfriend when a black man in a hoodie walked up behind them, pulled a gun and fired.

Two friends of the couple were walking ahead of them. They, along with the girlfriend, ran for cover and called police. Not one of them was injured, but they were not able to give police any information about the suspect.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found Westbrook on the ground. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

At this point, detectives have no details about the suspect, but they believe it's possible the shooting might have been gang related. They declined to elaborate.
