PHOENIX -- As the summer heat reaches unpleasant highs, so too does the number of car thefts here in Arizona.

July and August are the top two months for car break-ins, but there are a few easy steps you can take to make sure you aren’t the next victim.

One way to make your vehicle less attractive to potential car thieves is to etch your VIN number in each piece of glass.

“If you have your VIN etched on each piece of glass on your automobile it can be a really effective deterrent to thieves because they would have to replace every piece of auto glass to sell that vehicle and it does cut into their profit margins,” said John Candaso with AAA Insurance.

Alarms and hidden tracking devices are also good ways to combat auto theft. If your vehicle didn’t come with such a device it’s recommended that you have one installed.

Simple tips like always locking your doors, parking in well-lit areas, and keeping your belongings out of sight are also easy ways to make sure your vehicle isn’t targeted by thieves.
