LAKE PLEASANT, Ariz. -- A family outing at Lake Pleasant had a tragic ending Saturday when two brothers drowned.

The victims, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, are Dan Nguyen, 19, and Thanh 'Matt' Nguyen, 20, both Glendale residents.

The unfortunate incident began when one of the brothers tried to swim across a channel that is 100-feet long, but couldn’t make it.

The other brother jumped in to help, but both men were unable to get out of the water, which was 20-feet deep.

Bystanders performed CPR while waiting for the paramedics to arrive.  Paramedics said it took them a while to arrive on scene because of where the accident took place.

“We have to drive out to Carefree Highway, over into this side of the lake, and around over here and locate the scene, so in that process the clock is ticking,” said Tom Pendley with the Peoria Fire Department.

Authorities don’t believe alcohol played a role in the incident.
