Rollover spawns deadly 9-vehicle pileup on EB I-10Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- One person was killed and at least one more was injured in a nine-vehicle pileup involving three commercial vehicles on Interstate 10 early Thursday morning.
The wreck happened at about 1 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 between Ray Road and Chandler Boulevard. That portion of the freeway was closed for hours.
According to witnesses, a Toyota pickup truck was speeding eastbound when the driver lost control and rolled the vehicle. Both commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles hit the rolled truck.
The driver of the pickup was thrown from his truck. He died at the scene.
At least one other person was injured and taken to a local hospital. It's not clear what vehicle that person was in and his condition was not immediately available.
Detectives have not determined if alcohol was a factor in the pileup, but they aren't ruling it out. They also have not released any information about the victims.
While few details about the wreck were available, investigators have wrapped up their on-scene work at about 6 a.m., allowing cleanup crews to get to work.
By 8 a.m. the cleaners were doing a final sweep in preparation for reopening the freeway. Traffic was moving smoothly through that section of I-10 by about 8:15 a.m.
