SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a woman accused of abusing several horses.

Michelle Salazar, 52, turned herself in to investigators on Tuesday afternoon.

Deputies had been looking for Salazar since last Thursday night when they responded to a boarding ranch near 144th Street and Dixeleta Drive.

Investigators came across seven emaciated horses, some of which were a couple hundred pounds under weight.

“These horses have not been treated properly. No medical attention, not fed properly, just a whole list of problems that we call cruelty,” Sheriff Joe Arpaio remarked last week.

Three of Salazar’s horses have since died, while the rest are being taken care of by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

Salazar is now facing animal cruelty charges.
