Man shot, killed in pickup outside North Phoenix condos; suspects on the loosePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Investigators are trying to piece together the events that led up to the death of man inside a truck outside a Phoenix condo complex overnight.
It happened at about midnight at the Paradise Villas at 29th Street and Paradise Lane, which is between Bell Road and Greenway. According to Sgt. Trent Crump, a silver pickup plowed into a light pole right in front of a garage.
Details are still developing, Crump said the truck was heading east on Paradise Lane when shots rang out.
"We understand that there were two Hispanic males that were seen on the side of the road," Crump said. "There were some gestures between them and the vehicle … that's back here that's collided with the light pole."
Video from the scene showed markers on the ground tagging the locations of what appeared to be bullet casings. Additional markers traced the path of the truck from the street to where it crashed.
Crump said investigators believe a passenger might have jumped out of the truck before bullets started flying. Police are talking to that passenger, who is the owner of the truck. They also are trying to determine if there was a third person in the truck.
The driver, has not been identified, was pronounced dead on the scene. The victim is a Hispanic male between 21 and 25 years old.
Homicide investigators have very little to go on, Crump said. The two men who were spotted on the sidewalk are believed to be between the ages of 18 and 21. That's all police know about the suspects at this point.
Although they are not 100-percent certain, Crump said investigators believe the shooting might have been gang related.
