Police arrest suspect in Chandler hit-and-run

CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Chandler Police have arrested the man suspected of running over a child on a bicycle Friday afternoon.

Ronnie Chavez, 24, was taken into custody and booked into the Maricopa County Jail on one count of failure to stop for an accident involving death. The charge is a class three felony.

Eleven-year-old Aaron Arnold was crossing Arizona Avenue on his bike just south of Knox Road when he was struck by a Dodge Dakota pick-up truck driven by Chavez.

Chavez fled the scene and ditched his truck at an apartment complex near Chandler Boulevard and Alma School Road. He eventually returned to the scene of the accident with his father and spoke to officers.

Investigators learned that Chavez was behind the wheel at the time of the collision and placed him under arrest.
