PHOENIX -- A Valley woman and her 14-year-old son were arrested this month following an investigation into the 2010 death of a young child.
Guillermina Maldanado, 32, has been charged with child abuse, while her son has been detained at the Juvenile Court Center for first-degree murder.
On December 29, 2010, 15-month-old Jose Valencia Maldonado was taken to Banner Good Samaritan Hospital by his mother and two other adults because he wasn’t breathing.
Phoenix Police officers were called to the hospital where they were told that the child had been pronounced dead by the medical staff. Officers went on to learn that Jose had bruises, scratches, abrasions and bite marks on his body.
Authorities visited the home where the baby had been and came across Maldanado, who is Jose’s aunt. Maldanado’s then 12-year-old son and eight other kids were also in the home.
Following the initial investigation, nine children were turned over to CPS for temporary placement due to the unusual nature of the Jose’s death.
Authorities continued to investigate the case and established probable cause that Maldanado’s son was responsible for Jose's death.
Investigators interviewed the boy on Wednesday, at which time he admitted to biting Jose, punching him numerous times, and throwing objects at him.
The boy also said that he tied a bandana tightly around Jose’s neck for a long period of time, and when he returned to remove the bandana Jose was dead.
The investigation also revealed that Maldanado had allegedly been abusing her children, including her son accused of killing Jose.
