PHOENIX -- A Phoenix man faces a murder charge in connection with the stabbing death of his mother.
Phoenix police said Zachary Baxter, 21, is being held in Long Beach, Calif., and is awaiting extradition to Arizona.
A court warrant was issued Friday charging him with first-degree murder after Danette M. Baxter, 46, was found dead in her apartment near 53rd and Taylor streets on June 10.
The discovery was made after California Highway Patrol stopped Zachary Baxter in downtown Long Beach for DUI. Baxter allegedly told the arresting officer that his mother was dead at home and Long Beach police contacted Phoenix police to do a welfare check.
Phoenix homicide detectives flew to California to interview the suspect and process evidence.
Neighbors said Baxter, who had been living in Florida, moved in with his mom a few months ago, but the two were not getting along. Those neighbors said they heard the pair arguing on several occasions.
