Sheriff's deputies raid Motel 6 in PhoenixPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Maricopa County Sheriff's Office deputies surrounded the Motel 6 off Interstate 17 and Bell Road Wednesday night.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio said his office got a tip that a few fugitives were hiding there.
Arpaio's office suspected several people wanted for murder in New Mexico could be at the hotel.
SWAT officers and K9s worked for more than two hours searching for the suspects.
They found their car but did not know what room they were in, so deputies had to go room to room.
"This is very difficult to go knocking on doors, breaking doors down, when you're not sure who you're looking for," Arpaio said. "We wanted to do this right and, fortunately, we knocked on the right door and she came out."
Eventually, the deputies hit their target room.
Suspect Sarah Martinez, 26, surrendered, and was arrested in connection with a May murder in San Juan, N.M.
Martinez did not put up much of a fight, according to deputies, and she even smiled at the news cameras as a deputy led her away from the motel in handcuffs.
Arpaio said several of Martinez's friends, four women and one man, were in the room with her. Two of the women were arrested for harboring a felon.
The whereabouts of the other murder suspects are not known at this time.
