ASU confirms student is presumed to have drowned in Thailand

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State University has confirmed that student Joshua Shane is presumed to have drowned in the ocean off Patong, Thailand.

Shane, who is majoring in sustainability at ASU, was in Thailand to participate in a study abroad program with other students.

On Tuesday night Shane and four other students went swimming, but he never returned to shore.

ASU said they are saddened by the incident, and are offering their condolences to Shane’s friends and family.

ASU is also providing counseling services to the students and faculty who were in Thailand with Shane, and anyone else who may have known him.

Shane, 21, is from Olathe, Kansas. He is a junior at ASU.
