Fire causes delays on Interstate 17Posted: Updated:
PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- A brush fire shut down Interstate 17 for hours on Sunday.
The fire broke out Sunday afternoon two miles south of Cordes Junction and closed the northbound and southbound lanes, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
Authorities believe the fire may have started when a cigarette was tossed out of a car window.
Southbound traffic was backed up for 10 miles, while northbound traffic was backed up for six miles.
Many drivers had to pull over and wait it out.
About 20 acres were burned.
