PHOENIX -- A transient Valley couple has been accused of abusing their 11-day-old child.

Monasia Thomas, 19, and Adrian Nicco Grado, 19, were arrested after authorities determined that they were responsible for the bruises and scratches on their baby.

Thomas and Grado first took their baby to the Crisis Nursery claiming that the child suffered injuries after falling out of a stroller and onto the street.

Police later contacted Thomas, who said Grado was responsible for the marks on the baby’s back.

Authorities then spoke with Grado, who said Thomas was often rough with the child. He told police that she once hit the baby’s head against the headboard of a bed, and would squeeze the child while holding her.

Grado also admitted that he had pinched the child’s cheeks out of frustration when she was crying, and lifted the baby out of her car seat by her arm.

Thomas eventually confessed to digging her nails into the child’s back, grabbing her face, and shaking her back and forth. Thomas added that this was her first child and she didn’t know what to do because the baby was always crying.

Thomas has been charged with five counts of child abuse. Grado is also facing multiple child abuse charges.
