TEMPE, Ariz. -- A traffic stop in Tempe Thursday night led to an officer-involved shooting.

According to police, an officer pulled over a car near College Avenue and Cornell Drive and noticed the smell of marijuana.

Tempe police Sgt. Jeff Glover said a male passenger jumped out of the car and ran into an alleyway. He then reportedly pulled out a handgun and turned toward the officer.

The officer shot the man, but he continued down the alleyway.

The officer called for backup and the man was soon found lying on the ground near Auburn and Tulane drives.

Ramone Trammel, 26, was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive. The officer was not injured.

The female driver fled the scene. Police later found her and she was interviewed about the incident. Her identity has not been released.

The investigation is still ongoing.
