PEORIA, Ariz. -- The Peoria Police Department on Monday identified the victim of Friday's fatal house fire.

According to department spokesman Jay Davies, Wayne R. Kelley, 58, was non-responsive when firefighters pulled him from the remains of his home Friday afternoon. Paramedics were unable to save Kelley; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Firefighters were called to the house in the neighborhood southwest of 75th and Peoria avenues at about 2:45 p.m. Kelley was the only one inside when the fire broke out. A neighbor tried to help.

"I just heard a bunch of popping noises as I was knocking at his door, trying to get him out," James Rios said. He tried to rescue Kelley. "The cop told me I had to leave."

Fire crews found Kelley near the back of the house after they put out the flames.

The bulk of the damage to the house was to the roof and attic.

While the cause of the fire is under investigation, detectives said there is nothing that leads them to believe it was deliberately set.
