PHOENIX -- An 18-year-old has died after being shot early Saturday morning.

Phoenix police were responding to a shots fired call when they were flagged down by one of the victim’s cousins at Virginia and 75th avenues. Officers found the victim in the driver’s seat suffering from gunshot wounds.

Officers learned that Jonathan Ryan Peters and two of his female cousins went out around 3 a.m. to get fast food. After returning home they discovered their order was incorrect and headed back to the restaurant.

While turning south on 75th Avenue, someone opened fire from behind.

Peters was shot with his foot still on the gas pedal. The front passenger grabbed the steering wheel and engaged the emergency brake, but the vehicle continued moving.

The front passenger was eventually able to stop the car by reaching down for the foot brake.

As officers investigated the vehicle, they heard several more gunshots to the north. Officers responded to the area of North 75th Avenue and West Cheery Lynn where they saw several suspects fleeing the scene.

Two persons of interest were detained by police and interviewed.

Police are still investigating the shooting.
