MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. -- Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies made a large drug bust just south of Interstate 8 on Wednesday. Deputies used ground units and a sophisticated helicopter to seize a vehicle that was carrying more than a half a ton of marijuana.

A 16-year-old illegal alien was apprehended and taken into custody on charges of conspiracy to transport narcotics.

Deputies made the bust after discovering a vehicle covered by a tarp in the area of Vekol Valley, explained Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Vekol Valley is known to be a common area for drug and human trafficking.

“Since the beginning of this year, my deputies have come across over 12,000 pounds of marijuana and arrested nearly 100 illegal aliens in the Vekol Valley,” Arpaio said. “That’s a problem area and it’s about time for another crime suppression operation utilizing my Air Posse and other resources focusing on drug and human trafficking.”

The marijuana seized on Wednesday is said to have a street value between $750,000 and $1.35 million.
