FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) -- Authorities are investigating the death of a Goodyear man who apparently collapsed while trying to hike the summit of Humphrey's Peak in Flagstaff.
The Coconino County Sheriff's Office says 53-year-old John Greer was found unconscious by two hikers late Friday morning about a quarter mile beneath the summit at the 12,000-foot level. The hikers performed CPR for more than 30 minutes, but were unable to revive Greer.
Authorities say the county's Search and Rescue coordinator and volunteers hiked to the location and confirmed Greer was dead.
Greer's body has been transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office as sheriff's officials continue to investigate the death.
Greer's family says he was a frequent hiker and runner and was undergoing high-altitude training in the Flagstaff area for an upcoming race.
