LAVEEN, Ariz. -- A 2-year-old boy was killed Saturday morning after a heavy metal gate fell on top of him.
The boy was outside with his uncle who was doing yard work near 51st avenue and Dobbins when a gust of wind toppled the gate according to authorities from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
MCSO spokesman Jeff Sprong said the gate had been secured with two clamps. The uncle removed the clamps so he could get on the other side of the gate to remove weeds.
He reportedly propped the gate up against two walls, but a wind knocked it over on top of the child, crushing him, Sprong said.
The child was rushed to Phoenix Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Officials estimate the gate weighed about 500 pounds.
Detectives are treating the case as a tragic accident.
