PHOENIX -- A Valley man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a woman over a fake gift card.

On Friday, Cesar Chacon, 27, was given a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the murder of Mary Steyer, 30.

Chacon was also sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for misconduct involving weapons.

“I ain’t no coward. I feel sorry for what happened to your daughter,” Chacon told Steyer’s family in court on Friday.

Steyer’s body was found with multiple gunshot wounds behind a Phoenix convenience store near 20th Street and Thomas Road back in November of 2010.

Chacon eventually told investigators that he had purchased a gift card from Steyer which wound up being a fake.

This past March, a Maricopa County Superior Court jury found Chacon guilty of first-degree murder and misconduct involving weapons.
