Monsoon Special 2012: Dust storm predictions for this summerPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- The setup for the dusty and dry 2011 monsoon season looks a lot like what we're seeing heading into the 2012 monsoon.
We had a very dry previous monsoon, in 2010, and that was followed by a very dry winter.
This year, we're coming off another dry monsoon and what turned out to be a pretty dry winter and spring in the Southwest.
Meteorologist Gary Woodall with the National Weather Service in Phoenix believes that there's concern for the potential for more large dust storms this summer. The land is dry and unless we get an early AND wet start to the monsoon, large dust storms remain a threat.
Typically, storms start in early July but are mostly dry. By the end of July and into August, we typically see more significant rainfall.
