FLORENCE, Ariz. -- The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Air Unit had a successful Wednesday assisting with ongoing task force operations aimed at human and drug smuggling.

Air support was first called in to help the West Desert Task Force locate and find a suspected drug load in the Vekol Valley north of Interstate 8.

Shortly after arriving on the scene, a white Ford F-150 was found in the thick brush containing 2,010 lbs. of marijuana.

The footprints of three suspects were tracked eastbound from the truck, but no one was found during a search of the area.

Just moments later, the air unit traveled southwest to track another suspected drug load along Freeman Road.

A Chevrolet Suburban was subsequently found hidden in the brush. A registration check revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Phoenix and had been used to smuggle marijuana.

Prior to returning to the hangar in Casa Grande, the air unit investigated a suspected scout position located on a large hill top northwest of Interstate 8 and Highway 84.

An investigation of the area turned up several sleeping bags, supplies, clothing, and food.

A battery charging station, multiple cell phone chargers, and several hand held radio chargers were seized as well. Deputies also found a shotgun hidden in a crevice next to one of the lookout points.

It is believed that two to three people were living at the scout position and had enough food and water to camp for several weeks.
