MESA, Ariz. -- An early morning apartment fire forced nine families out of their homes Thursday.

Firefighters were called out to the three-story complex near Southern Avenue and Country Club Drive at about 4 a.m.

When fire crews arrived on the scene, police were already evacuating some 40 people.

It's not clear what sparked the fire, but firefighters believe it started on the balcony of a corner apartment and then quickly moved into the building's attic.

The fire destroyed two units. Several apartments below those sustained severe water damage.

One person was treated for smoke inhalation, but was not taken to the hospital. No other injuries were reported.

The fire is under investigation.

The Red Cross is assisting the nine families affected by the fire.
