Phoenix weather: Windy and hot todayPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- A hot and windy day is on tap for Arizona .
A low-pressure system passing to our north will drive stronger winds today and tonight, but won't bring much relief in terms of cooler temperatures, clouds or rain. Relative humidities will stay very low, with the dry and windy weather prompting a red flag warning in the northwest part of the state between noon and 8 p.m.
Look for winds in the high country and on the fire lines gusting to 40 mph today.
In the Valley, we'll see breezy conditions, with gusts up to 30 mph.
The good news with the winds is that they are changing direction today.
On Monday, northeasterly winds pushed smoke from the Sunflower Fire southwest into the Valley. Today, winds are expected to be out of the southeast and southwest, which will blow the smoke away from the Valley.
Air quality should be better with less smoke, and yesterday's health watch for smoke is no longer in effect. However, there is a health watch for high ozone levels today. Carpool if you can, and refuel your vehicle after dark.
Valley highs will top out near 104 for the next couple of days, with upper 90s and more sunshine likely for the weekend.
